Sammy Matsaw is a 2nd year PhD student at the University of Idaho in Water Resources as an IGERT fellow (Integrative Graduate Education, and Research Traineeship). On his father’s side he is Shoshone-Bannock where he is a member, and on mother’s he is Oglala Lakota. His research at the University connects culture with ecology by highlighting the connections between salmon, humans, and native freshwater mussels within the greater biological stream communities of the Pacific Northwest.
Jennifer Han is a postdoctoral research assistant here at WSU under Lori Carris. She completed her graduate wor at University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, where she studied sex chromosome evolution in papaya. Nick Naeger is also a postdoc at WSU under Steve Sheppard. He has been researching honey bees for over 15 years. He completed his graduate study at University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, where he studied bee behavior and brain genetics, including the behavior of worker bees that lose their queens. Currently, both Dr. Han and Dr. Naeger are testing fungi and fungal products for their effectiveness in improving bee health and combating pollinator decline.
Dr. Lori Carris is a native of Michigan and a mycologist at Washington State University, where she has 1989. In case you don’t know, a mycologist is someone who studies fungi. Dr. Carris has been the recipient of many awards and honors in her career, and she bears many responsibilities, including teaching at WSU and community forays and workshops, as the Associate Dean of the Graduate School at WSU, as a former vice president of the Mycological Society of America, and of course, as a researcher. Her research includes work with a veterinary toxicologist on fungal poisoning of pets, the systematics of a genus of pathogens that infect cultivated grain crops and wild grasses, as well as the diversity and systematics of morels.
Elias Bloom is a doctoral student with Dr. David Crowder in the Department of Entomology at Washington State University. His research focuses on the diversity and pollination ecology of native bees in the PNW, and he is relying on citizen scientists to get involved and contribute much needed data for his study. Dr. Audrey Fu is a scientist in the Department of Statistical Science, the Institute for Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Studies, and the Center for Modeling Complex Interaction at the University of Idaho. Dr. Fu employs statistical analysis to contribute to basic understanding of the genetic basis of cancer.
